SUMMARY:

This very unique, one of a kind California VW Hightop Multivan is finally up for sale after a decade of meticulous upgrades. Every system has been professionally gone through with no expense or detail spared. The van has been lovingly upgraded for safety, comfort, and livability, and is now ready for a new adventure.

The van began it’s life as an all-California Carat Vanagon tin top. I specifically wanted an automatic van instead of a Syncro for a number of reasons. The most obvious is that everyone in our family can drive it and it’s so easy in traffic. The other reason is that the automatic is incredibly reliable, and the Syncro transmissions aren’t - both because of the availability of parts/cores and the design itself. This van with the Peloquin torsional slip differential and high clearance is amazing off-road. I never wanted to do proper rock crawling - just wanted to be able to get into the backcountry comfortably regardless of snow, rocks or mud.

So the Carat is the “top of the line” version of the Vanagon tin top. It has all the options, and we thought it would be cool to marry that to an insulated, customized high-top was added so anyone can stand upright comfortably, and there is an incredible amount of storage. A slide out upper bunk can sleep two adults, the lower bunk sleeps two more, and a front seat hammock can handle two kids.

The custom kitchen can be completely removed and holds 7 gallons of fresh water, a microwave, toaster and sink. The kitchen was made out of welded steel to protect all occupants in case of a crash (we didn’t want a plywood box to hurt our children, so we had a fabricator make us a custom design that secure directly into the DOT approved jump seat bracket.

A marine grade locking front bulkhead means that large valuables can be stored securely, while a hidden satellite tracking system gives everyone peace of mind while traveling. A custom video monitoring system allows for 360 degrees of viewing while driving with night vision technology for those late night camping spot maneuvers. A custom kitchen area allows for a removable microwave/toaster, sink and refrigerator/freezer which makes this van one of the most versatile ever made. Everything professionally designed and installed.

Stephan’s AutoHaus completed the blank check one of a kind chipped 1.8t engine and drivetrain conversion. Everything from the suspension and brakes to the transmission and exhaust have been modified to handle the power of the 240 hp / 250 ft-lb of torque system. The Peloquin Torsional Slip Differential provides amazing off-road capability.

The owners have been active members in this amazingly supportive West Coast Vanagon community, but very real family health challenges have made using the van much more difficult in recent years. These vans are really meant to be used, and it’s time for someone else to enjoy this one of a kind Vanagon.

Conservatively, there is at least $100,000 documented and invested in this van, and it is currently appraised and insured for $85,000. Asking price is based on the condition described below and is sold “as is”.

We just had the entire van detailed, so it is ready to go. The van is 99% rust free. We did find a small spot of rust on the passenger rear quarter that is the size of a quarter. Likewise, the Rocky Mountain Westy bumpers has some discoloration under the powder coat, but they are all bulletproof and intact. Lastly, part of the clear coat on the front of the van will be due for a respray in a few years, but no rust or any major problem. Just want a buyer to go into this with their eyes wide open.
